Customs are habits that are carried out or often
called gaukang, the aim is to respect
the ancestors and at the same time know the creatures of Allah, and stay in
touch with the community. Regarding customs, I was interested in one of the
customs in Gowa district, specifically in Jipang Village, South Bontonompo Subdistrict,
Gowa district, to describe it to fulfill one of the final project tasks in the
Cross-Cultural Understanding course.
According to some sources, the customs of Appalili Accera Gaukang or people's feasts are usually held in the
framework where heirlooms such as three chests containing royal flags and three
seven-meter bamboos in the Lompoa Jipang
Balla are issued and paraded around the village by residents. This village,
heirloom, and bamboo surround the house of the traditional leader of Jipang
Village. It is said that in the past, this flag had historical significance in
strengthening Gowa as the largest maritime kingdom in the eastern region of the
archipelago. These royal objects are still neatly stored and are now used as
one of the interesting tourist objects in Gowa district. The distance is around
15 km from the south of Sungguminasa city. The first flag is 2 X 4 meters and
on the outside is red and has a verse on the chair. The inside is white and the
center is blue. In the middle of the Flag is a picture of a person whose left
hand is holding a sword and his right hand is holding a Lengu (shield). The second flag is named I Labolong ri Tanete, because it is said that this flag is said to
come from Tanete Bulukumba. While the third flag is called Jimaka which comes from Luwu. It's called crazy bamboo (Bambu Gila) because this bamboo often
goes berserk, so it will be held by some people who will be dragged here and
there. It is said that this crazy bamboo was in ancient times. Serves as a
powerful weapon in destroying enemies who want to destroy the country.
According to history, this crazy bamboo can detect every enemy
that enters Jipang. When there are enemies who still and intend to disrupt the
country, then as soon as that crazy bamboo rages and attacks the enemy to death
all.
If this crazy Bamboo finishes attacking the enemy, it can only be
stopped by Angangaru (oath of loyalty) and the bamboo then returns to its
original place. This custom began around the 1930s and lasted until now. The
event was attended by thousands of people, not only residents of Jipang Village
but many also from outside residents who wanted to see firsthand and find out
how the program proceeded.
This custom is held
every two or three years. Usually, this custom is carried out if there are
residents who ask as a thank you and greeting for the sustenance obtained by
sacrificing or slaughtering a buffalo. He said, usually people who come to
watch this traditional program have a desire for something and intend to have a
party if granted. After being granted, he will come back by donating a buffalo
to be feted.
